Back in 2016 a new amendment was approved by the MSC with the deadline for compliance set for the 1st of July 2018.

The amendment means that all ships must carry at least 2 ATEX - Intrinsically Safe, Handheld portable radios. This for each part of their fire fighting party.

A piece of the amendment can be found at the bottom of the article.

How to comply with SOLAS Requirements

To comply with the regulations and requirements of SOLAS you may need to increase or even start using ATEX Radios. As a two way radio supplier, we can help you every step of the way to get these specialist communications. You can purchase your radios from us.

What is an ATEX Intrinsically Safe Radio?.

ATEX radios are used predominately in high risk environments where sparks or interference can allow for a source of ignition. For example, refineries, power plants, tanker sites and so on.

A standard two way radio could potentially give off heat and or electrical sparks that could lead to dire consequences if it was to cause ignition to flammable substances.

ATEX radios on the other hand are carefully developed and regulated under strict manufacturing techniques to reduce/eliminate heat and sparks which could be caused by the handset. All refineries, power plants and similar industrial sites operate ATEX radios for these purposes.

How to buy the right ATEX Radio for SOLAS regulations.

We not only operate our own intrinsic radios are part of our hire fleet but we also supply ATEX radios to clients. We can supply you with the relevant handheld UHF ATEX radios needed plus handheld microphones for firefighting crews. This will allow them to work in the hazardous environments your vessel can be.

Regulation 10.10.4 briefly describes the fire-fighter radio; “........two-way radio telephone apparatus shall be of an explosion-proof type or intrinsically safe.”*

There is also the recommendation that The fire-fighter radio may have a coloured housing to distinguish the radio from other on board radios used for normal operations.* This again is something we can help you with.
