Motorola DP4000 Ex First ATEX Certified to UK/5.20

Motorola Solutions DP4000 ATEX Series is the first radio that reaches dual certification UK/5.20 and MED5.20. If you have a newly registered vessel then you will need to purchase new ATEX Radios to meet new maritime standards.

Back in July 2018, new SOLAS regulations came into place that required all vessels to comply with rulings that meant there must be a minimum of 2 Walkie Talkies on board for the ships Firefighters.

More on those new rules can be found on the news article we covered at the time. Just click here to read it in more detail. SOLAS Regulations for Marine Fire Fighters 2018

The SOLAS regulations outlined that the portable 2 way radios that are used for fire fighting must be of an intrinsically safe type. In EU waters that means the radio must be ATEX certified.

However. The new changes to the rules mean that an ATEX radio is no longer good enough on its own.

What does this mean for you?.

On EU Registered vessels since the 3rd of October this year, new fire fighting radios deployed on the ship must comply with the EU Maritime Directive or (MED/5.20) and show the "WheelMark" logo.

For UK registered vessls from the 1st of January 2023, the new fire radios must comply with UK Merchant Shipping Regulations or (UK/5.20) and carry the "Red Ensign".

The quality you expect from Motorola Solutions means that the DP4000 series radio is WORLDS FIRST ATEX Radio to achieve both certifications.

The radios that meet this criteria are the Motorola DP4401 EX UHF ATEX and Motorola DP4801 EX VHF ATEX.

We expect the new DP4401 and DP4801 Ex Models to appear with these new logos in late Spring 2023. Our figure below shows what to look for if you purchase new portable radios for your vessel.
